How to authenticate a Bottega Veneta Jodie

Six things to look at on every pre-loved Jodie before you say yes — from intrecciato weave tension to the specific way the brand stamp is heat-pressed.

The Jodie is one of the most-counterfeited bags of the last five years. The good news: real Jodies have a handful of details that fakes still struggle to replicate. Here's what to look at, in order.

1. The intrecciato weave

On a real Jodie, every leather strip is the same width and the weave tension is even across the bag. Fakes either use too-wide strips (the bag looks chunky) or uneven tension (the surface ripples). Hold the bag at arm's length: a real Jodie's surface is matte and uniform.

2. The knotted handle

The signature knot is hand-formed and slightly asymmetric — no two are identical. Counterfeits often have a perfectly symmetric knot or visible glue at the base. Run your fingernail along the knot's seam: it should be tight, with no flaking.

3. The interior brand stamp

Bottega's stamp reads BOTTEGA VENETA / MADE IN ITALY in small, evenly-spaced caps. The font is sans-serif and slightly condensed. Letters are heat-pressed into the leather, not printed — you should be able to feel the indent. The font weight on counterfeits is usually too thick.

4. The serial card and authenticity slip

Real Jodies ship with a small white authenticity card and a leather-tag serial. The serial format is region-specific. Counterfeit cards often use generic Lorem-style numbering or a too-glossy card finish.

5. The lining

Real Jodies are lined in soft suede that matches or contrasts the exterior. Fakes often use a polyester or shiny synthetic lining. If the lining feels plasticky or smells chemical, walk away.

6. Stitching count and hardware weight

Real Bottega stitching is consistent at roughly 7-8 stitches per inch with no skipped threads. Hardware is solid metal — pick the bag up empty; a real Jodie has noticeable weight from the brass feet and clasps. Hollow-feeling hardware is a near-certain tell.

When to walk away

If even one of these checks feels off, walk. The pre-loved market is full of well-authenticated Jodies — there's never a reason to settle on a maybe. Every Bottega listed at Bae passes all six checks above before it's photographed.
